NEW YORK, Sept 27 (TNA) – The United States and Morocco have reaffirmed their strategic alliance in the North African region, with the U.S. pledging to support increased investment in Morocco’s Southern Provinces.
Morocco’s Embassy in Thailand issued a statement on Friday saying U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita held a meeting on September 24 on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York.
During the meeting, Deputy Secretary Landau informed the Moroccan minister that the United States would back increased investment in Morocco’s Southern Provinces, aligning with a U.S. initiative to promote economic and commercial diplomacy.
The statement noted that since the U.S. recognized Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara region under Moroccan sovereignty in December 2020, both parties have enhanced discussions to reinforce this recognition. These discussions have included several U.S. investment projects in the Moroccan Sahara.
President Donald Trump underscored the U.S. government’s commitment to launching investment projects in the Southern Provinces through this declaration and in a congratulatory message sent to King Mohammed VI of Morocco on the occasion of his accession to the throne on July 30, 2025.
The Moroccan Embassy added that in an effort to reinforce its multi-dimensional partnership with allies, Morocco has positioned itself as a strategic ally of the United States in Africa. -819 (TNA)
